Maalaukset Escape Impossible ja Sunrise of the Sunset käsittelevät universaalien rajojen ja vastakohtien teemoja. Escape Impossible vangitsee ajatuksen mustan aukon tapahtumahorisontista, jossa pako on mahdotonta – se on vertauskuva nykymaailman suurista kriiseistä, joista emme tunnu löytävän ulospääsyä. Sunrise of the Sunset taas leikkii elämän syklisyydellä ja vastakohdilla: se yhdistää lopun ja alun hämärtäen ajan ja muutoksen välistä rajaa. Näiden teosten kautta tutkitaan rajatilaa – hetkeä, jossa olemme jumissa kahden ääripään välillä pyrkien ymmärtämään paitsi maailmankaikkeuden mittasuhteita, myös omien tekojemme seurauksia.

Liminal Space

The paintings Escape Impossible and Sunrise of the Sunset explore themes of universal boundaries and contrasts. Escape Impossible captures the concept of a black hole’s event horizon, where escape is impossible—a metaphor for the major crises of our time, from which we seem unable to find a way out. Sunrise of the Sunset plays with the cyclic nature of life and opposites, merging endings with beginnings and blurring the line between time and transformation. Through these works, the concept of a liminal space is examined—a moment where we are trapped between two extremes, striving to understand not only the vastness of the universe but also the consequences of our own actions.

Målningarna Escape Impossible och Sunrise of the Sunset utforskar teman om universella gränser och motsatser. Escape Impossible fångar idén om ett svart håls händelsehorisont, där flykt är omöjlig—en metafor för vår tids stora kriser, från vilka vi verkar oförmögna att hitta en utväg. Sunrise of the Sunset leker med livets cykliska natur och motsatser; den förenar slut med början och suddar ut gränsen mellan tid och förändring. Genom dessa verk undersöks begreppet gränstillstånd—en stund då vi är fångade mellan två ytterligheter och försöker förstå inte bara universums vidder, utan också konsekvenserna av våra egna handlingar.

Riikka Ahlfors työskentelee pääasiassa urbaanien maisemien ja tilojen parissa. Hänen viimeisimmät työnsä jatkavat kaupunkimaisen todellisuuden ja modernin ympäristön tutkimista. Ahlfors luo tilallisia häivähdyksiä, jotka metaforisesti luovat lisäkerroksen kaupungin kuvaan. Hän ottaa palasia koetuista hetkistä ja maalaa ne kankaalle tuntemattomiksi paikoiksi, heterotopioiksi – tilaksi tilassa. Välitilassa tyhjyys on yksi komponentti, joka kutsuu katsojan kokemaan teoksen ja sen ympäristön. Realismi, joka on piilotettu abstraktioon, tulee ilmi välähdyksen lailla.

Tämä lähestymistapa kyseenalaistaa tilan ympärillämme – onko se sovelias eläviin organismeihin vai suunniteltu kuin teatterin lavastus?

Taiteilija tarkastelee ja sisäistää jokapäiväisiä hetkiä urbaanissa ympäristössä ja tallentaa ne kameralle. Kuvien pohjalta hän luo uusia spontaaneja yhdistelmiä, värien kontrastia, vaaka- ja pystysuuntaisia asetelmia jatkaakseen gallerian tilan hänen heterotooppisiin maisemiin. Maalausten taika on valossa ja varjoissa. Satunnaisesti taitettu valo luo väliaikaisia hetkiä, joita Ahlfors tuo näkyväksi töissään. Aineettomat olosuhteet muuttuvat aineellisiksi kankaalla. Nämä taiteilijan luomat tilat avaavat katsojalle ei olemassa olevia maailmoja, jotka saavat lopullisen muotonsa tämän mielikuvituksessa.

Riikka Ahlfors works primarily with cityscapes and spaces. In her latest work she continues to explore the visual language of urban reality and the modern spatial environment. Ahlfors creates a map of spatial ghosts which metaphorically create additional layers of the city. She takes fragments of the environment and translates them into painted unknown places, heterotopias, worlds within worlds, where the emptiness is one of the components. The void absorbs the environment and becomes its ghost. And thus the reality hidden in the abstraction manifests itself as a flash.

Through this approach she is questioning the space around us, whether it is suitable for living organisms, or it is designed just as a theatrical set?

The artist observes everyday reality and urban routines and waitsto capture the moments with a camera. Based on images she forms spontaneous combinations using contrasting colours, vertical and horizontal arrangements in order to continue the space of the gallery into her heterotypic scenes. The magic of the paintings is in light and shadows. Randomly refracted light creates temporal spaces that Ahlfors transfers to her paintings.

Intangible spaces become material on the canvas. The places created by the painter open up non-existent worlds to the viewer, which must be reconstructed in the visitor’s imagination.
